There is more to the way these lures attract fish though. One of the trademarks of Murray Cod is the way they will strike at or near a lure without actually eating it. Often a fish is aggressive because it is defending its territory and so it is not necessesarily striking the lure to eat it, but to ‘shoo’ it away from its home. Sometimes when the fish are in the right mood you will feel a brief instant where it’s as if you lost contact with the lure, or the lure stopped working in the water.

What’s really happened is that a large fish has rushed the lure in an attempt to scare the intruder from the area. This is quite common around breeding season when cod are territorial. The fish will charge the lure and turn its head as if to shoulder it out of the area, or push it away with its tail. This displaces the water around the lure and actually moves it towards the angler, meaning the action of the lure stops briefly until the angler retrieves the slack line. The Rock’n runner puts out so much cod attracting vibration and noise that it is common and easy to feel these intermittent semi-strikes from fish.

Great, so fish are trying to get rid of the lure but they aren’t eating it?? Well true, but if the cod rushes the lure a few times and gets really agitated eventually they are going to have to eat the thing to get some peace and quiet! I always fall back on the adage that fish don’t have hands, they can’t slap a mozzie that’s bothering them, they have to eat it. If you get the sensation that a cod has charged your lure its likely that you are in a cod holding spot, keep putting casts through the area and be prepared for the fight!

Rock'n Runners work well at night, with all that vibration the cod can home right in on them.

Rock’n Runners are now available in 3/8th oz in five colours and soon to be in ¼ oz and many more colours. Try them on their own or with a soft plastic tail to bulk them up, they are dynamite on cod and no doubt will shock the bass.
